What is Usenet?
Usenet is a worldwide bulletin-board system that maintains
newsgroups,
electronic mailing lists where users can remotely post their views on a given topic.
UC Davis maintains certain Usenet newsgroups for educational and research purposes.
Examples of these are newsgroups where students can discuss course subject matter
with their teaching assistants, professor and other students, and newsgroups where
researchers from a certain discipline can compare notes.
How to Read UC Davis Usenet Newsgroups
Access to UC Davis Usenet News is restricted to UC Davis faculty, students and
staff (UC Davis affiliates). Using the
campus'
distributed
authentication service, UC Davis affiliates can access the UC Davis news
server,
news.ucdavis.edu, when logging in via a third party Internet service
provider (ISP). UC Davis affiliates can also access the UC Davis news server by
dialing in to the campus modem pools, and will encounter no authentication. If you are dialing in from an ISP, you must have a
UCD LoginID and Kerberos password to access UC Davis Usenet resources. You can
obtain your UC Davis Computing Account
at
http://computingaccounts.ucdavis.edu/.
- Once you have established an Internet connection, open your browser to a new window.
- Log in to the Kerberos server by going
to news.ucdavis.edu.
- A warning page will appear, explaining that UC Davis newsgroups are protected by
Kerberos authentication. Next, a pop-up box will appear, asking for your UCD LoginID and
Kerberos password. If you know your UCD LoginID and Kerberos password, enter it in the box.

- Once you have been authenticated as a UC Davis user, you will be able to access Usenet
newsgroups using either Mozilla or newsreading software.
Accessing Usenet Resources Using Mozilla
- Go to the "Window > Mail & Newsgroups" menu
- Click on "Edit" and then "Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings"
- Click "Add Account" then "Newsgroup Account" and follow the directions
- When asked for your News Server type in "news.ucdavis.edu"
- Click on "news.ucdavis.edu" on the left side and click on "Subscribe to Newsgroups"
