Announcement: IET to close Campus Modem Pool

Information and Educational Technology is phasing out the campus dial-up network service. This change is part of the 2008-2009 budget reductions, and is based on the cost of continuing to provide this service for the small and decreasing number of customers still using it. To allow clients time to implement an alternative means of communicating with the campus, IET began a six-month phase out of the service starting July 7. During the second half of 2008, campus faculty, staff and students who are still using the modem pool might get a busy signal when they attempt to dial up. On Jan. 1, 2009, IET will end the service entirely.

Alternatives to the campus' modem pool service include the purchase of Internet services from commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs), such as dial-up, DSL or cable modem services. Clients may also consider cellular mobile data cards offered by various cellular carriers that use cellular technology to connect to the Internet.

UC Davis Campus Modem Pools

CR currently supports three dial-up modem pools that provide off-campus access to the UC Davis computing network. All three of the dial-up modem pools operate 24-hours-a-day and are now populated with high-speed 56K modems (V.90).

Please note that your connection speed also depends on the capabilities of your home modem and telephone lines. UC Davis students, staff and faculty are eligible to use the IET modem pools, and can access the campus network from home or anywhere off-campus (e.g., a cyber cafe, friend's house or public library).

The dial-up modem pools allow users to access e-mail, the Internet, Melvyl (the library), and Usenet (newsgroups).
